Inmate Death

The Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau is investigating an inmate death that occurred at the Ventura County Courthouse in Ventura.  On Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 9:41 a.m., inmate Walter Shandor, 61, was making a court appearance at the Ventura County Courthouse.  Shandor began having chest pains and notified a court deputy.  The court deputy escorted Shandor to a holding area and immediately notified medical personnel.  Shandor became unresponsive and was rendered emergency aid by court deputies.  Ventura City Fire personnel and AMR paramedics were summoned to provide more advanced life saving efforts.  Shandor was transported to Ventura County Medical Center and ultimately was pronounced dead by hospital physicians.
As a matter of policy and procedure, all inmate deaths are investigated by the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau. There was no indication of violence or suspicious circumstances.
The Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy and determined that Shandor died from a serious medical condition.
