In March 2016 VPD Street Crimes Unit detectives began investigating a report of elder abuse and identity theft that involved the caretaker of a 77 year old victim and an 84 year old purse theft victim.
Detectives obtained evidence, that Amalia Azunna, 39, of Ventura, and Timothy Tye, 52, of Port Hueneme, had used credit cards and checks stolen from an elderly male that employed Azunna as a caretaker, made unauthorized purchases at numerous stores in Ventura and Oxnard. Azunna was also identified as the person who used a credit card that had been reported stolen from another victim’s purse to make unauthorized charges at a Ventura store. The total loss exceeded $4,500.
A search warrant for Azunna’s residence was obtained and on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 10:15 a.m., Street Crimes Detectives served the search warrant and arrested Azunna. A search of her vehicle and residence turned up a small amount of suspected methamphetamine, narcotic paraphernalia, stolen checks, and other items of property that had been purchased with the victims’ credit cards.
Detectives obtained additional information that Timothy Tye was staying at a local motel in the 2100 block of E. Thompson Boulevard and responded to that location to exercise Tye’s probation search terms. Tye is on probation for possession of controlled substances and providing false information to police.
Detectives located Tye in a motel room and took him into custody. A search of the room turned up additional stolen checks, stolen property, narcotic paraphernalia, and a small amount of suspected methamphetamine. Both Azunna and Tye were interviewed by detectives and later booked at the Ventura County Main Jail on the charges of Elder Abuse; Identity Theft; Possession of a Controlled Substance; Burglary; and Conspiracy to Commit a Crime.
