Ridgecrest, CA – At 3:11 a.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2016, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a structure fire in the 200 block of Cisco Street. The caller reported hearing a loud explosion and could see fire to the rear of an apartment unit. When firefighters arrived, they encountered a fire that had extended into three adjoining single-story apartment units. Firefighters quickly attacked the fire and made a search of the units. One of the units was vacant and each of the other units had one single occupant. Both occupants were able to escape unharmed. Firefighters protected the neighboring apartment units and were able to extinguish the fire in 25 minutes. A ruptured residential gas line continues to burn while PG&E works to control the leak. Firefighters have isolated the area. Crews have yet to determine what caused the explosion and fire. The two displaced occupants have declined housing assistance.
