On Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 7:05 a.m., a two-vehicle traffic collision occurred resulting in one fatality in an unincorporated area of Ventura County on Highway 118, east of Balcom Canyon Road.
Driver 1, identification withheld pending family notification, driving a 2016 Hyundai Elantra, was traveling eastbound Highway 118, east of Balcom Canyon Road at an undetermined speed. Rodney Loera (Driver 2), driving a 2016 Peterbilt transfer dump truck with a trailer, was traveling westbound Highway 118, east of Balcom Canyon Road at approximately 40 miles per hour. For reasons still under investigation, the Hyundai crossed over the painted yellow line into the westbound traffic lane directly into the path of the Peterbilt. Loera was unable to avoid the Hyundai and a head-on collision occurred. After the collision, both vehicles blocked the westbound traffic lane. Driver 1 was pronounced deceased on scene by Ventura County Fire Department personnel. Loera did not sustain any injures.
The incident resulted in the closure of both eastbound and westbound traffic lanes of Highway 118 for approximately five hours. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and Caltrans assisted with traffic control.
This collision is under the investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Moorpark Area office. All witnesses are encouraged to contact the CHP Moorpark office at (805) 553-0800.
