On 11/4/2014, at   about 7:30 p.m., a victim contacted the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office to   report a residential burglary that occurred at the victim’s residence in the 100   block of Bounds Road, in the unincorporated area of Ventura. Patrol deputies   from the Ojai station processed the scene for evidence and located latent fingerprints   at the point of entry and possible DNA evidence inside the residence.
The latent fingerprints   were processed by Sheriff’s Crime Lab Technician Riordan and placed in the State’s   automated fingerprint identification system, known as AFIS. In March 2016, a match   was made to fingerprints belonging to Gabriel Garza, 22, of Oxnard, that had   been recently entered into the database when he was fingerprinted during an   unrelated arrest.  In April 2016, the   evidentiary fingerprints were manually compared to a known set of fingerprints   belonging to Garza by an expert and all four of the recovered latent fingerprints   matched those belonging to Garza.

On Tuesday,   June 7, 2016 at 7:30 a.m., detectives from the Ojai station tracked and   located Garza in Oxnard. He was interviewed and confessed to the burglary.   Garza was arrested for a violation of California Penal Code section 459-   residential burglary and booked into the Ventura County Pre-Trail Detention   Facility. Bail was set at $50,000.
