East Bakersfield, CA - Just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24, 2016, the Kern County Fire Department received a call for a detached garage and house on fire in the 2400 block of Center Street. A reinforced structure response was started by dispatchers. When crews arrived on scene, they encountered a fully involved garage and a 1,500 square foot house more than half involved in flames. The response was upgraded to 2 Alarms, as the fire was also threatening three adjacent homes. Crews made access to the fire from both Center Street and Kentucky Street keeping a safe distance away from arcing power lines that were down. The fire was controlled in approximately 25 minutes and caused an estimated $140,000 in damage. One civilian was transported to the hospital with minor burns to the face. KCFD Fire Investigators responded to the scene to determine the cause of the fire. A family of five has been displaced and is being assisted by the Red Cross.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Fire equipment responding to the scene had difficulty accessing Center Street due to the street being heavily congested with onlookers. When seconds count, any delay in response can mean injury, death, and/or greater damage to homes and structures. Please stay out of the way at emergency scenes.

ASSISTING AGENCIES: BFD, KCSO, CHP, KC Building Department, PG&E, Red Cross.
